I took this picture (top) of a friend’s Piper Cub out on a lake a few years back.

He submitted it to an aviation magazine; it caught everyone’s attention, then was featured in a subsequent issue for one particular reason. Not the plane itself; nor is landing on a snowy lake unique. It’s not a particularly remote location, though it is several miles out on a frozen lake. Any takers?

More pics below just for fun.

No idea, but please give me a star once you’ve revealed the answer so I can check back and learn!

Don’t feel bad, I didn’t know either. My friend had to tell me.

The lack of footprints makes me wonder how the photographer got to the point from which the photo was taken. Sure, the pilot could have taxied around, but I like to think that the photographer parachuted in just to take the photo.

Well, that didn’t take long. That’s exactly it! All the aviation peeps looked at it and thought, wow every other picture like this has footprints leading from the plane at least in SOME direction. The answer is actually that we chased the plane around on a snowmobile and took turns flying and riding. Land, chat, set a new meeting place, GO!

You win a ride on that plane! Just walk several miles out onto a frozen lake and wait for it to appear
